Our apple investigations all begin because of this man, Johnny Appleseed. His birthday is September 26 and this is the perfect time to begin talking about fall and apple picking. We begin our investigations by reading a book about Johnny Appleseed. Most of our students had never heard about him. We are lucky that many children's books have been written about him. The directed drawing to the left was inspired by First Grade Blue Skies. This one is my teacher sample of course, but the students did a great job with their own also. Being that school just started a few weeks ago, many are still unsure about their abilities and were hesitant to even try the directed drawing lesson. But they did it! |
This cute Johnny Appleseed poem hat is by My Happy Place on Teachers Pay Teachers. It shows the life cycle of an apple and even comes with a cute little poem. |
These cute window apples were inspired by Kinder Craze. I made mine using laminating film instead of clear contact paper mostly because of the cost. They were actually SO much easier to make than I thought and I they really do brighten up the classroom (and those bar windows!). You can read more about the process for this project on the blog under the entry: Apple Window Art in September. |
