Workshop #1: Alphabetic Principal- October
Workshop #2: Mathematics in Kinder- January
Workshop #3: Writing in Kinder- March
Workshop #4: Learn About 1st Grade! (given by the first grade teachers)
You are probably wondering where the students go during this workshop time. Well, the workshops are held during our grade level meeting block times and students are out on the yard doing p.e. with the aides. Workshops are about 50 minutes long.
Parents are invited to sign up for workshops 1-2 weeks ahead of time (click the link below for a copy of the form that we use). Knowing who will be attending gives us an idea of the number of freebie packets to prepare. This also gives us the opportunity to make special reach out attempts directly to families whose child could benefit from them attending. We are lucky in that all four kinder teachers are bilingual so are able to translate the workshop for parents who need it.
Our math parent workshop was created around these 5 mathematical terms (click link above to download). We understand that if we expect our students to get concept reinforcement at home through daily homework, we need to let our families in on our mathematical practices and purpose. The 10 frame, number bond, and part-part-whole approaches are huge in our classroom lessons. It's important to us that parents also learn about these learning strategies. Math in first grade can be intense. For this reason, building a solid foundation in kindergarten is essential.
The last 5 minutes of our workshops are devoted to a sneak peek at the upcoming first grade expectations. We like to show parents how standards progress into the next level. This is always an eye opener for them.
They are a sure way to empower your parents to get involved.
