This is the perfect lesson for any class learning about plants (we are currently in the middle of Treasure's Plants Unit 8). First, I read a couple books about Georgia O'Keefe to the class. My readings emphasized that women can also grow up to be great artists and that careful observations in nature can reveal many things. Next we identified the colors and lines we saw in Georgia's flowers. I then demonstrated the "wet painting" technique on watercolor paper as I modeled how to paint an over-sized flower. I continuously emphasized the importance of size in Georgia O'Keefe's flowers. Finally, I walked around and sprinkled table salt onto students' wet paint for a cool "sprinkled" effect.
